chickpeas fertiliser and yield calculator

A tonne of chickpeas removes about 35 kg of nitrogen, 8 kg of phosphate and 12 kg of potash from the field. Replacing offtake is the starting point for any nutrient plan.

  1. Area = 40
  2. Target yield = 2
  3. Nitrogen content of your product = 34.5
  4. Phosphate content = 46
  5. Potash content = 60
  6. Nutrient use efficiency = 70
  7. Seed rate = 180
  8. Expected harvest = 2 * 40 = 80
  9. Nitrogen removed by the crop = 2 * 35 = 70
  10. Phosphate removed = 2 * 8 = 16
  11. Potash removed = 2 * 12 = 24
  12. n_applied = 70 / (70/100) = 100
  13. Nitrogen product rate = 100 / (34.5/100) = 289.855
  14. Phosphate product rate = 16 / (46/100) = 34.7826
  15. Potash product rate = 24 / (60/100) = 40
  16. Nitrogen product for the whole area = 289.855 * 40 / 1000 = 11.5942
  17. Phosphate product total = 34.7826 * 40 / 1000 = 1.3913
  18. Potash product total = 40 * 40 / 1000 = 1.6
  19. Seed for the whole area = 180 * 40 / 1000 = 7.2
  20. Applied nitrogen per tonne of yield = 2 > 0 ? 100 / 2 : 0 = 50

Values are shown to six significant figures here; the arithmetic itself runs on exact fractions and is only rounded where a number is printed.

Recent calculations

    The formula

    • nutrient removed = yield x removal rate per tonne
    • product rate = nutrient required / nutrient content of the product
    • nitrogen is adjusted for use efficiency because losses are unavoidable

Removal rates are typical published figures and vary with variety, season and whether the straw or residue is taken off.

This replaces what the crop takes. A proper plan also accounts for soil indices, manure history and any legume in the rotation.

Phosphate and potash build or deplete a soil reserve rather than being used in-season, so a below-index soil needs more than removal.

    Frequently asked

How much nitrogen does chickpeas need?

It removes about 35 kg of N per tonne of crop, so a 2 t/ha crop takes off roughly 70 kg/ha. Applied rates are higher because not all of it is taken up.
