soybean fertiliser and yield calculator

A tonne of soybean removes about 60 kg of nitrogen, 12 kg of phosphate and 20 kg of potash from the field. Replacing offtake is the starting point for any nutrient plan. Soybean fixes most of its own nitrogen, so the removal figure is not a fertiliser requirement.

  1. Area = 40
  2. Target yield = 3.5
  3. Nitrogen content of your product = 34.5
  4. Phosphate content = 46
  5. Potash content = 60
  6. Nutrient use efficiency = 70
  7. Seed rate = 130
  8. Expected harvest = 3.5 * 40 = 140
  9. Nitrogen removed by the crop = 3.5 * 60 = 210
  10. Phosphate removed = 3.5 * 12 = 42
  11. Potash removed = 3.5 * 20 = 70
  12. n_applied = 210 / (70/100) = 300
  13. Nitrogen product rate = 300 / (34.5/100) = 869.565
  14. Phosphate product rate = 42 / (46/100) = 91.3043
  15. Potash product rate = 70 / (60/100) = 116.667
  16. Nitrogen product for the whole area = 869.565 * 40 / 1000 = 34.7826
  17. Phosphate product total = 91.3043 * 40 / 1000 = 3.652 17
  18. Potash product total = 116.667 * 40 / 1000 = 4.666 67
  19. Seed for the whole area = 130 * 40 / 1000 = 5.2
  20. Applied nitrogen per tonne of yield = 3.5 > 0 ? 300 / 3.5 : 0 = 85.7143

Values are shown to six significant figures here; the arithmetic itself runs on exact fractions and is only rounded where a number is printed.

    The formula

    • nutrient removed = yield x removal rate per tonne
    • product rate = nutrient required / nutrient content of the product
    • nitrogen is adjusted for use efficiency because losses are unavoidable

Removal rates are typical published figures and vary with variety, season and whether the straw or residue is taken off.

This replaces what the crop takes. A proper plan also accounts for soil indices, manure history and any legume in the rotation.

Phosphate and potash build or deplete a soil reserve rather than being used in-season, so a below-index soil needs more than removal.

Soybean fixes most of its own nitrogen, so the removal figure is not a fertiliser requirement.

    Frequently asked

How much nitrogen does soybean need?

It removes about 60 kg of N per tonne of crop, so a 3.5 t/ha crop takes off roughly 210 kg/ha. Applied rates are higher because not all of it is taken up.
