LUFS loudness normalisation calculator
Streaming services normalise everything to a target loudness. Mastering louder than the target just means being turned down.

Show the working
- Measured integrated loudness = -9
- Platform target = -14
- Measured true peak = -0.3
- Loudness range = 6
- Gain the platform will apply = -14 - -9 = -5
- True peak after normalisation = -0.3 + -5 = -5.3
- Headroom below -1 dBTP = -1 - -5.3 = 4.3
- Risk of intersample clipping = -5.3 > -1 ? 1 : 0 = 0
- The platform will turn it down = -5 < 0 ? 1 : 0 = 1
- Size of the level change = abs(-5) = 5
- Loudest you could go at this peak = -9 + (-1 - -0.3) = -9.7
Values are shown to six significant figures here; the arithmetic itself runs on exact fractions and is only rounded where a number is printed.

The formula
- gain = target loudness - measured loudness
- new true peak = measured peak + gain
Mastering to -6 LUFS to be "loud" achieves nothing on a normalising platform except a squashed dynamic range that gets turned down anyway.
True peak differs from sample peak because reconstruction between samples can overshoot. Leave at least 1 dB.
