Dilution calculator
The dilution equation says the amount of solute does not change when you add solvent, so concentration times volume is a constant.

Show the working
- Stock concentration = 10
- Final concentration = 0.5
- Final volume = 100
- Stock to take = 0.5 * 100 / 10 = 5
- Solvent to add = 100 - 5 = 95
- Dilution factor = 10 / 0.5 = 20
Values are shown to six significant figures here; the arithmetic itself runs on exact fractions and is only rounded where a number is printed.

The formula
- C1 x V1 = C2 x V2
- V1 = C2 x V2 / C1
- solvent to add = V2 - V1
The concentration units cancel, so molarity, percent, mg/mL or anything else works as long as both concentrations use the same one.
For concentrated acids, add acid to water and never the reverse.
Frequently asked
How do I make a 1:10 dilution?
Take one part stock and add nine parts solvent, for ten parts total. Set the final concentration to a tenth of the stock.
