Rice to water ratio calculator
Absorption cooking needs a ratio by volume or weight; the right one depends on the grain. Rice roughly triples in weight as it cooks.
Water
450mL
- Cooked weight
- 714
- Servings
- 4.0
- Rice in US cups
- 1.62
- Water in US cups
- 1.90
Show the working
- Uncooked rice = 300
- Rice type = 1.5
- Cooked rice per serving = 180
- water_g = 300 * 1.5 = 450
- Water = 450 = 450
- Cooked weight = 300 + 450 * 0.92 = 714
- Servings = 714 / 180 = 3.966 67
- Rice in US cups = 300 / 185 = 1.621 62
- Water in US cups = 450 / 236.5882365 = 1.902 04
Values are shown to six significant figures here; the arithmetic itself runs on exact fractions and is only rounded where a number is printed.

The formula
- water = rice weight x ratio
- a millilitre of water weighs a gram, so weight and volume are interchangeable for the water
- cooked weight = rice + about 92% of the water, the rest lost as steam
Absorption ratios assume a lid and a low simmer. Cooking rice like pasta, in excess water, needs no ratio at all.
Rinsing rice removes surface starch and a little water clings to the grains; some cooks reduce the water by a tablespoon or two to compensate.
