rice fertiliser and yield calculator

A tonne of rice removes about 17 kg of nitrogen, 7 kg of phosphate and 20 kg of potash from the field. Replacing offtake is the starting point for any nutrient plan.

  1. Area = 40
  2. Target yield = 7
  3. Nitrogen content of your product = 34.5
  4. Phosphate content = 46
  5. Potash content = 60
  6. Nutrient use efficiency = 70
  7. Seed rate = 100
  8. Expected harvest = 7 * 40 = 280
  9. Nitrogen removed by the crop = 7 * 17 = 119
  10. Phosphate removed = 7 * 7 = 49
  11. Potash removed = 7 * 20 = 140
  12. n_applied = 119 / (70/100) = 170
  13. Nitrogen product rate = 170 / (34.5/100) = 492.754
  14. Phosphate product rate = 49 / (46/100) = 106.522
  15. Potash product rate = 140 / (60/100) = 233.333
  16. Nitrogen product for the whole area = 492.754 * 40 / 1000 = 19.7101
  17. Phosphate product total = 106.522 * 40 / 1000 = 4.260 87
  18. Potash product total = 233.333 * 40 / 1000 = 9.333 33
  19. Seed for the whole area = 100 * 40 / 1000 = 4
  20. Applied nitrogen per tonne of yield = 7 > 0 ? 170 / 7 : 0 = 24.2857

Values are shown to six significant figures here; the arithmetic itself runs on exact fractions and is only rounded where a number is printed.

    The formula

    • nutrient removed = yield x removal rate per tonne
    • product rate = nutrient required / nutrient content of the product
    • nitrogen is adjusted for use efficiency because losses are unavoidable

Removal rates are typical published figures and vary with variety, season and whether the straw or residue is taken off.

This replaces what the crop takes. A proper plan also accounts for soil indices, manure history and any legume in the rotation.

Phosphate and potash build or deplete a soil reserve rather than being used in-season, so a below-index soil needs more than removal.

    Frequently asked

How much nitrogen does rice need?

It removes about 17 kg of N per tonne of crop, so a 7 t/ha crop takes off roughly 119 kg/ha. Applied rates are higher because not all of it is taken up.
