Beer colour SRM calculator
Colour comes from the malt, weighted by how dark each one is. The relationship is not linear, which is what the Morey exponent handles.

- Batch volume = 20
- Malt 1 weight = 4.5
- Malt 1 colour = 4
- Malt 2 weight = 0.4
- Malt 2 colour = 120
- Malt 3 weight = 0.15
- Malt 3 colour = 1200
- l1 = 4 / 1.97 = 2.030 46
- l2 = 120 / 1.97 = 60.9137
- l3 = 1200 / 1.97 = 609.137
- Malt colour units = 20 > 0 ? (4.5*2.030 46 + 0.4*60.9137 + 0.15*609.137) * 2.20462 / (20 / 3.785411784) : 0 = 52.1058
- Colour = 52.1058 > 0 ? 1.4922 * 52.1058^0.6859 : 0 = 22.4615
- Colour in EBC = 22.4615 * 1.97 = 44.2492
- Total malt = 4.5 + 0.4 + 0.15 = 5.05
- Share of speciality malt = 5.05 > 0 ? (0.4 + 0.15)/5.05*100 : 0 = 10.8911
Values are shown to six significant figures here; the arithmetic itself runs on exact fractions and is only rounded where a number is printed.

The formula
- MCU = sum(weight in lb x colour in Lovibond) / volume in gallons
- Morey: SRM = 1.4922 x MCU^0.6859
- EBC = SRM x 1.97
The Morey equation is a curve fit that holds to about 50 SRM. Beyond that everything looks black anyway.
A small amount of very dark malt dominates the colour, which is why the exponent is below one.
