3D printing filament calculator
A print is mostly air. Infill percentage is the number that decides how much filament it actually takes.

Show the working
- Model volume = 120
- Infill = 20
- Shell and top or bottom = 25
- Filament density = 1.24
- Filament diameter = 1.75
- Spool price = 22
- Spool weight = 1000
- Effective solid fraction = 25/100 + (1 - 25/100) * 20/100 = 0.4
- Material volume = 120 * 0.4 = 48
- Filament weight = 48 * 1.24 = 59.52
- cross_section = pi * (1.75/20)^2 = 0.024 052 8
- length_cm = 0.024 052 8 > 0 ? 48 / 0.024 052 8 : 0 = 1995.61
- Filament length = 1995.61 / 100 = 19.9561
- Material cost = 1000 > 0 ? 59.52 / 1000 * 22 : 0 = 1.309 44
- Prints per spool = 59.52 > 0 ? 1000 / 59.52 : 0 = 16.8011
Values are shown to six significant figures here; the arithmetic itself runs on exact fractions and is only rounded where a number is printed.

The formula
- solid fraction = shell + (1 - shell) x infill
- length = material volume / filament cross-section
Slicer estimates are more accurate because they know the actual toolpaths. This is for quoting before you slice.
Above about 40% infill the strength gain per gram falls off sharply; more perimeters usually help more.
