Paper weight and GSM calculator
US basis weight is measured on a parent sheet that differs by paper type, which is why 20 lb bond and 50 lb text are the same paper.
g/m2
Weight of the stack
2494.800kg
- Weight per sheet
- 4.990
- US bond basis weight
- 21.3 lb
- US text basis weight
- 54.1 lb
- US cover basis weight
- 29.6 lb
- Stack height
- 52.0
- Bulk
- 1.3000 cm3/g
Show the working
- Paper weight = 80
- Sheet length = 297
- Sheet width = 210
- Number of sheets = 500
- Thickness per sheet = 0.104
- sheet_area = 297 * 210 / 1e6 = 0.062 37
- Weight per sheet = 0.062 37 * 80 = 4.9896
- Weight of the stack = 4.9896 * 500 = 2494.8
- US bond basis weight = 80 / 3.7597 = 21.2783
- US text basis weight = 80 / 1.4801 = 54.0504
- US cover basis weight = 80 / 2.7048 = 29.577
- Stack height = 0.104 * 500 = 52
- Bulk = 80 > 0 ? 0.104 * 1000 / 80 : 0 = 1.3
Values are shown to six significant figures here; the arithmetic itself runs on exact fractions and is only rounded where a number is printed.

The formula
- sheet weight = sheet area x GSM
- bond pounds = GSM / 3.7597, text pounds = GSM / 1.4801, cover pounds = GSM / 2.7048
A4 at 80 GSM weighs exactly 5 g a sheet, which is the entire reason the A series was designed the way it was: A0 is one square metre.
Basis weight is not comparable across paper grades without the conversion, because each grade uses a different parent sheet size.
